Did you know that your vehicle’s air conditioning system loses up to 15% of its coolant / refrigerant mixture every year?

A 3 year old vehicle could potentially have lost up to almost half of its refrigerant. For every 15-20 grams of refrigerant that is lost, the internal temperature of the system rises by 5 degrees. Over time these factors in turn impact on the perfor-mance and wear on the system’s individual components and eventually can cause seizure.

The compressor is the centre of the air conditioning system, it takes the gas from a low pressure and converts it to a high pressure gas and circulates it into the system.

The compressor is like a mini engine, in the sense that most have pistons, piston rings, a crankshaft , seals and bearings and like an engine, it needs to have oil circulated through the system to lubricate the moving parts and seals. The oil in your vehicles air conditioning system is mixed together with the refrigerant and thereby carried around the system.

It is recommend that your air conditioning is serviced every 18-24 months. This includes the old refrigerant being removed, checks carried out to ensure there are no leaks and the system being recharged with a new oil/refrigerant.

In addition it is also recommend that your air con (receiver dryer) filter be replaced every 4 years. A build up of particles in the filter compromises its effectiveness, which can lead to costly repair bills in the future.

Servicing does not attend to smells from the air con, these are usually caused by fungi, bacteria etc. A sanitizer/deodoriser can be administered to the system to kill the bacteria, however it is recommended to check the condition of the pollen (cabin air) filter as well and change if necessary. A contributing factor to bacteria build up is using the air con solely on the “recirculation” function. The “fresh air” function is not as effective but is good practice to use every so often.
